Environmental Audits - Purpose and Method

Water Quality

Aesthetic condition as per SEPA classification.

The purpose and value of using this classification is that it is observational and allows us to report to SEPA and other agencies in terms they can relate to (photos useful here).

At the end of this assessment the river should be classified as follows:

High No visible contaminants
1
Good Traces of List B contaminants only no gross litter
2
Medium Only List B contaminants present
3
Low Only List A contaminants present or List A and B contaminants

SEPA Classification

List A contaminants

Sewage derived litter and solids, including
  • faeces
  • toilet paper
  • contraceptives
  • sanitary towels or tampons
  • cotton buds

Oils
Non natural foam, scum or colour
Sewage fungus
Sewage or oily smells

List B contaminants

General non-sewage derived litter
Building waste
Gross litter including:

  • Agricultural machinery
  • Motor vehicles
  • Furniture
  • Shopping trolleys
  • Road cones
  • Bikes and prams
