Hazard on the River Spey Below Fochabers

A Cautionary Tale

My partner and I were caught in the Spey hazard on Sun. 24th June. Approx. 3/4 mile downstream from Fochabers there is an awkward dogleg made dangerous by subsidence on the West bank resulting in Willow trees, branches and roots overhanging the dogleg and also just under the surface. We ended up hanging onto the tree after our Canadian got snagged on branches.

The fight to get out of the water was quite difficult as the current is incredibly strong at that point.

Once out of the water and on the bank you don't feel much safer as the whole bank is moving. Floating downstream could result in you getting trapped in underwater debris.

This is a serious accident waiting to happen. Our canoe did not fair quite so well as ourselves. It got caught in the roots and branches and spent 48 hours underwater and horizontal to the flow of the river. When it eventually got spat out what was once a Coleman now resembles a pancake!
