UK Sport
has been notified of a change to the list of prohibited substances
issued by the International Olympic Committee. There have
been several queries about the way the revisions have been
made. It was understood that the World Anti-Doping Agency
had taken over this responsibility (although the change has
been agreed by the IOC Medical Commission). It was also understood
that changes would have a 3 month implementation period and
should not become effective until 1 April 2001.
A most
important change has been made to the status of Terbutaline
which is now considered prohibited even in its inhaler form.

As asthmatic
athletes will require some time to change their medication,
it is not intended to introduce this restriction into the
national (UK) programme until 1 April 2001. However, where
this substance is already prohibited by a sport's regulations
or in international competition you are warned that the restriction
may still be applied by the International Federation.
Discussions
are ongoing with the World Agency and IOC to resolve the system
of updating the list and notifying changes.
