Congratulations
to Andy Morton of Kirkcaldy Canoe Club won a silver medal
in K1 in the 50 - 54 age group at the Canoe Marathon Masters
World Cup at Stockton on Tees. Andy was one of ten paddlers
from Scotland who took part in the event which took place
on 30th and 31st August prior to the World Canoe Marathon
Championships.
Andy
has had more than one medal success at this event in past
years. Sadly work commitments prevented him from winning a
possible second medal this year when he had to turn down the
chance of racing in K2 with the current World Champion the
following day.
Other
Scottish paddlers who took part were:
- Margaret
Chapman
- Fiona
Hutt
- Les
Kirkpatrick
- Jonathan
Hutt
- Kenneth
Bryce
- Drew
Batchelor
- Drew
Manzie
- Alan
Mackintosh
- Nigel
Royle
The
Masters World Cup races are split into 5 year Age bands for
K1 paddlers and 10 year age bands for K2. The event run in
conjunction with the World Championship is open to any paddler
of 35 or over.
2001
is the second time that the World Marathon Championships have
been held in Britain and this year included the first Junior
World Marathon Championship.

The races
took place on the river Tees at Stockton on Tees, starting
and finishing just above the Tees Barrage and going up the
river to Preston Park. The course consisted of a long and
a short circuit on the river adding up to a total of 22.2
km.
The section
through Stockton itself was challenging for many paddlers
as the washes from the boats bounced off the sides making
the water very rough. The competitors had to paddle this section
on both circuits which meant that they passed through the
town four times.
Whilst
no other Scottish paddlers won medals at the event, it would
be fair to say that everyone tried hard and put in a very
creditable performance. Sadly in the womens event, the K2
race was cancelled 30 minutes before the start as only three
boats had entered, one of which was the Scottish crew of Margaret
Chapman and Fiona Hutt.
Details
of the individual results are shown below. Full results can
be found at : http://www.canoemarathon.fsnet.co.uk
In addition
to the main event, several open events were held including
a 5km race in which Jennifer Hutt took 2nd place overall and
was the first junior paddler to cross the finish line.
The following
evening a 10km race was held in which several Scottish paddlers
took part but unfortunately due to strong winds and large
waves caused by rescue boat washes, Alan Tordoff was the only
one not forced to retire.
