Canals

Licences are required for paddlers to use the British Waterways Board canals. This includes both lowland canals such as the Forth and Clyde Canal and Union Canal and Highland Canals such as the Crinan Canal and Caledonian Canal. These are provided free of charge for canoes and kayaks and can be arranged in advance by phone or mail. The licence system is used to track usage of the canal and to plan improvements to facilities etc. Canoes and kayaks are not allowed on the Falkirk wheel.

The Waterways Trust (Scotland) is planning to deliver a programme of free activities including kayaking to young people in Falkirk and Glasgow. The trust aims to build permanent changing and access facilities for the sole use of people on these programmes at Lock 3, Grangemouth and Firhill Basin, Glasgow. It is likely that activities will commence before the building is completed. Eventually there will be some paid posts, and also opportunities for volunteers help. To discuss the project or offer voluntary help please contact Rita Crowe at the Waterways Trust on 0141 354 7559.
