Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

Loch Lubnaig

Over the past couple of years the Marathon event held on Loch Lubnaig has had trouble from the landowner at the southern end of the Loch (nearest Callendar). There is a parking and picnic area where the race has been based for the last 19 or so years but in 2000 he objected to the safety boats and was quite aggressive. After calming him down he agreed the racers could use the water in future - very generous as it does not belong to him - if he was contacted first. In 2001 the Marathon organisers did that and he prevaricated for ages, claiming he had to speak to other people. There were no Fand M problems. In the end the organisers gave up and went to the caravan park at the North end and raced with no problems.

Three or four years ago members of Edinburgh Kayak Club were told by angling types that they were not allowed paddle from the same car park (there were then notices on the trees saying No Boating), but insisted that they had a right to do so and in the end were told it was OK as along as they moved away from the area immediately adejacent to the carpark once on the water.

There is no reason why paddlers should not paddle on the loch, but the car park is a very popular place for tourists and locals and if a large group of paddlers tried to park there could be problems with overfilling it which could make paddlers unpopular with the locals, so park with consideration, and do not park on the road.
