Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

Averon

In the mid eighties the Easter Ross Canoe Club (now defunct and never affiliated to the SCA) attempted to negotiate an access agreement with Novar Estates. The SCA were involved in trying to sort out this heated access dispute, but emphasised that they didn't enter into such agreements and couldn't bind kayakers to keep them. The local paddlers were willing to agree to only paddle the river on Sundays and during the closed season but this wasn't enought for the estate and no formal agreement was ever made.

Recently there have been some incidents of paddlers being approached and told that the "Canoe Club" had agreed that the river would only be canoed on Sundays and that therefore they could not paddle the river. No such agreement exists. There is a long history or harassment of kayakers by fishy folk on the Averon. Anyone going to this river should be aware of this. The old advice isto be polite, reasonable but firm in your determination to enjoy your sport.
