DALSLAND CANOE MARATHON

[back to events]

Sweden’s toughest canoe race through Sweden’s most beautiful landscape

An idea was visualised during the Summer of 2003, this was to arrange in Dalsland the World’s biggest canoe competition "the DALSLAND CANOE MARATHON +" The Organiser of the Competition is the Bengtsfors tourist organisation "Dalsland Tourism " in conjunction with the Bengtsfors Municipality and the Swedish National Canoe Committee.

There are not many other areas associated with Canoe Tourism similar to the one in the Dalsland’s Canal area. This area is well known throughout the world for its fantastic canoeing waterways and it is estimated that there are over 5 000 canoeist per day using the Dalsland Canal system during the summer months. Improved quality/product development has been carried out during the past year in the form of issuing a new Environment-care Card System, enlargement and additional camping sites etc. which has helped it to be known as the The European Canoe Centre”. One of the motivations in arranging "The World’s Largest Canoe Marathon " is to increase the awareness of the General Public about the many possibilities that tourism has to offer within this area.

Objective/Vision

The objective/vision Is to establish a "Canoeist VasaLopp " (similar to the Famous Skiing Vasalopp,.held here in Sweden) which is a competition that is to be held annually, thereby creating the World’s biggest canoe race! The target for this first year Is 1 000 participants. The start will take place on Saturday 14th August 2004.

The Length of the Course and different stages

We are hoping to attract elite canoeist as well as those who enjoy physical exercise to the canoe race which is 55km long and is therefore longer than other canoe marathons. The reason for this is that The Dalsland Marathon + shall become known as a tough challenge instead of just a moment of physical exercise. We think that by increasing the total length we are keeping up with the times, and strengthening the characteristics of the event.

The Starting Point is for the senior race is at Baldersnas Manor House/Guest Harbour with three portages and 55 km to the finish at Bengtsfors.

The start for the Junior (12–18 years) 20.7 km race Is at Gustavsfors, they have no portages to finish at Bengtsfors.

The estimated time for the elite group is about four (4) hours, the slowest canoeist is estimated to arrive at the finishing post after about 14 hours.

The finish at Bengtsfors will be situated in the area of the Guest Harbour/Central Park right in the centre of the town. Here, the larger part of the ancillary activities that are being planned will take place
