James
"Seamus" Adam was a pioneering paddler, past honorary
president of the Scottish Canoe Association, newspaper executive,
author and much more.
James
was a close friend of the late Sir Alastair Dunnett, editor
of The Scotsman between 1956 and 1972. Together they canoed
from the Clyde to Skye in the 1930s. These adventures were
chronicled in a book called Quest by Canoe, later republished
as The Canoe Boys (still available),
which was penned by Sir Alastair and dedicated to James Adam.
The following
year James Adam made the first solo crossing of the Minch
by kayak and wrote a book "Over the Minch" (of which
this editor proudly possess a signed copy!).
Many paddlers
will remember his youthful enthusiasm when kindly opening
a recent Scottish Paddlesport Festival at the Bells Sports
Centre in Perth.
Our thoughts
go to his wife, family and many friends.
