Project
or Placement Title: Outdoor Activity Guidelines for Disabled
People Description of Company and ProjectProject Aim: To expand
the range of resources available to Equal Adventure Developments
Ltd, which can be utilised to make it possible for the Outdoor
Industry to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination
Act in partnership with The Institute for Outdoor Learning
and De Montfort University and Bendrigg Trust.
Objectives:
1. Expand
a current database of Equipment and Services for Inclusive
Adventure. 2. Add to the current manuscript on "How to
make an Outdoor/Fieldwork Centre more Accessible". 3.
Survey a range of Outdoor and Field Centres to assess needs
and concerns surrounding compliance to the DDA. Description:
A student placement sponsored by Equal Adventure Developments
Ltd, operating under the STEP UK programme through Business
Link for Cumbria. The project is for 8 weeks based at the
accessible offices of: The Institute for Outdoor Learning,
The Barn, Plumpton Old Hall, Plumpton, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11
9NP.
The aim
of the placement is to respond to the growing requirement
of the Outdoor Industry to provide inclusive facilities and
services, which are open to both disabled and non-disabled
people, in line with the Disability Discrimination Act. The
placement is a partnership project between The Institute for
Outdoor Learning, Equal Adventure Developments Ltd and De
Montfort University and Bendrigg Trust. The successful applicant
will play a part in the development of a range of resources,
including an access guide for Outdoor and Field Centres and
a database of adaptive equipment, in addition to running a
pilot survey of the Outdoor Industry on its needs in respect
of the Disability Discrimination Act. Specific Knowledge,
Skills and Qualities Required:
* Excellent
communication skills - written and verbal.
* Excellent
IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Basic Microsoft
Access.
* Good
knowledge of the Outdoor Industry.
* A basic
understanding of disability/inclusion/equity/access - would
be valuable.
* Self
Motivated. * Able to follow a project.

Opportunities & Basis/Length: 1 place for 8 weeks x 37
hours per week Location of Project: The Institute for Outdoor
Learning, The Barn, Plumpton Old Hall, Plumpton, Penrith,
Cumbria, CA11 9NP. Other information : The student will receive
£170 per week, free of tax and NI deductions
* The
successful student will attend full day project briefings
on 14 and 15 May 2003, the remainder of the 8 weeks will take
place over summer - project to be completed by 31 August 2003.
* Student
will undertake some travel - expenses will be reimbursed.
A presentation to be made to EAD Director early September.
The participating student will be required to sign a confidentially
agreement and must accept that all resources provided and
the information sourced whilst the project is undertaken,
is the intellectual property of the Sponsor Partnership of
Equal Adventure Development, The Institute of Outdoor Learning
and De Montfort University.

will be made at 11.00am from Penrith Railway Station, returning

4.00pm)
