Good news
from Caledonian MacBrayne,
the Hebridean and Clyde ferry operator. Prices for walk on
kayaks and canoes will be a fixed £5 single fare from
next summer. This means a significant reduction on the longer
routes such as Colonsay (was £17 return), Tiree (£19
return) and Outer Hebrides (£29 return).
Statement
from Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd;
"The
following will be inserted in the summer timetable and brochure
with the new rule/charges coming in to play at the start of
the summer timetable April 2003.
Kayaks/Canoes/Surf
boards;
Kayaks/canoes and surf boards carried by foot passengers will
attract a charge of £5 per single journey. In the interests
of safety and in consideration for other passengers, kayaks/canoes
and surf boards are not permitted up or down a passenger gangway.
They must be stored in the designated area on the car deck
under the supervision of a crew member"
This represents
a significant reduction on the longer crossings (for example
and will give paddlers the opportunity to visit more Islands
hopefully with economic benefits to both the Islands and Calmac
themselves through higher volumes.
