Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

Kelvin

The best egress point is to paddle one kilometre up the Clyde to just past Finnieston Crane and the budget hotel (urban delights!). There are steps up - the remains of the Govan ferry - that allow easy access to the road and avoids the need for a long walk out with your boat. Officially you probably need Clydeport permission to paddle to here, however they have never objected to a quick sneak up river. If you don't intend to run the falls then it's best to get out at Kelvingrove as the egress in the guide book is awful and also involves going on the tidal river.

Glasgow City Council are keen to develop use of the Kelvin as part of their "Water Space Strategy". They feel that an improved access point at Maryhill could facilitate a round trip on the Kelvin and Forth and Clyde canal via Kirkintilloch, and that improving access and clear the bank by the Kelvin Art Gallery play spot would improve paddling. If you have any comments on these ideas, or would like to be part of a users group please contact the SCA Access Officer.
