Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

Vehicles

Any right of access whether based in tradition or legalities covers access on foot. You do not have the right to drive your car over private roads or land. This will not change under proposed new legislation. Driving cars on private land is very visible, can block other legitimate access, erode vulnerable ground and can seriously annoy landowners. Some lanowners are OK about it if you ask permission but if you do and are granted permission don't pass that permission to anyone else. Some rivers and lochs are only accessible by "Shanks' Pony" - please respect this even where there may appear to be a drive-able track. Buy a light-weight boat and enjoy the exercise!
