Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

The SCA Access Charter

FREEDOM OF ACCESS

The SCA believe that it is a basic human right to paddle a canoe or kayak on the waters of Scotland, whether on the sea, on freshwater lochs, canals or flowing rivers.

We maintain that paddling on the water is as valid, environmentally sustainable and healthy a recreational activity as any other.

There has been a traditional right to roam in Scotland, which we believe includes the passage over water and that right allows canoeists access on foot to embark and disembark.

We accept that vehicular access along private roads is only reasonable with the consent of the owner.

ACCESS RESPONSIBILITIES

Freedom of access to Scottish waters should be exercised in a manner which is responsible towards other users and the interests of landowners. We accept that all waters are a shared and important natural resource.

Paddlers should adopt the Association's Code of Conduct and minimise their impact on the water environment.

We believe that all who use, enjoy and live in the countryside should treat each other with respect and courtesy.
