Access 2000. Issues relating to countryside access

The Foot and Mouth outbreak is currently under control, with no recent cases. However, there is still plently of food for thought in the way the crisis has been handled

  • Scotland in the Wake of Foot and Mouth looks at some of these issues.

  • The Executive has a list of sites still officially closed. Ross Finnie stated "The public can ignore any restriction sign not on this list. Unless an area is listed on this website the public can assume that it is access as normal".

  • There will be a conference on Foot and Mouth - Lessons, Legacy and Legislation hosted by SNH, sportscotland and VisitScotland on September 11th at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. This would be of interest to anybody affected by FMD in the recreational or commercial sector, whether landowners or users of the countryside. The keynote speech will be given by Alasdair Morrison MSP, Deputy Minister for Learning and-Lots-of-Other-Things. One of the key features is to look at lessons we need to learn for the Land Reform Bill. Important stuff. Cost is £20, which believe me, is peanuts for conference fees - set to attract the 'ordinary man and woman' and not just N.G.B representatives. More information is available from VisitScotland. Send application form and payment to Lynda Kerr, sportscotland, Caledonia House, South Gyle, Edinburgh, EH12 9DQ.
